JavaScript-heavy websites, or Single Page Applications (SPAs), present unique challenges for search engines. Unlike traditional static HTML sites, SPAs rely on client-side rendering to generate content.
The Rendering Gap
Googlebot renders JavaScript, but it takes resources. If your site takes too long to render, or if it errors out, your content might not get indexed.
Essential Fixes
- Internal Linking: Ensure you use real
<a href="...">tags.div onclicklinks are invisible to crawlers. - History API: Use the History API properly so that each view has a unique URL.
- Canonical Tags: Self-referencing canonical tags help prevent duplicate content issues when URL parameters are involved.
Dynamic Rendering
If you can't use SSR, consider Dynamic Rendering. Tools like Prerender.io detect bots and serve them a static HTML snapshot, while regular users get the full interactive JS experience.
